Nubes a Mi Alrededor: Oral Histories from Horizon Academy Rikers Island
In this bilingual sister publication to the Killing the Sky Rikers Island series, seven inmate students share their oral histories in their native Spanish and their second language, English.
Breathtakingly courageous, Nubes a Mi Alrededor, is the bilingual sister publication to Rikers Island's Killing the Sky series. In this work, seven inmate students share their stories in their native Spanish and their second language, English. Readers are transported to their 'hoods and corner delis, and the streets of other countries. The students paint a picture drawn of many shades of grey, releasing both writer and reader from stereotypes about criminals and "troubled kids." Like coal compressed into diamonds, their lessons-learned-the-hard-way become a glimmer of optimism and renewed perspective.
Curriculum Embedded Project
Every year, curriculum consultants from the Student Press Initiative have worked closely with the high school students at Horizon Academy, Riker's Island to write down the students' stories of personal struggle using the methodology of Oral History practices. This is Volume 4 in the Spanish Edition series.

"It's amazing what we can learn about the experiences and challenges confronting incarcerated youth by listening to their voices. Those who seek to help young people avoid a life of frustrated dreams and unfulfilled potential will find wisdom in these words."
Pedro Noguera, New York University, Steinhardt School of Education
