Creative Innovations in Math and Science Classrooms
Some of SPI's earliest and most successful projects grew out of math and science classrooms. When infused with literacy, math and science students become successful readers and creative writers. Congruent with the thinking process, writing is a singularly useful tool for the consolidation of learning and the expression of understanding in all curricular areas. Reading and writing synthesize disciplinary studies meaningfully, reflecting how people think and communicate within academia and beyond the classroom walls. Teachers and students develop holistic understanding of how science and math shapes experience and how they, as scientists and mathematicians, shape the world.
You can support math and science literacy in the classroom:
- $100 for digital resources: providing SPI staff and the students the opportunity to develop their math and science literacy skills
- $225 for a set of SPI math & science books: providing a local high school with the chance to read and learn from student authors
- $1200 to sponsor a student author: providing all necessary funding for staffing and material support of one student over the course of a school year in developing and publishing their student text
The Importance of Math and Science Literacy
Through school partnerships, side-by-side consultation, curriculum guides, and digital resources, SPI helps Science and Math teachers hone their praxis and create classroom environments that support individual learning and nurture the unique thinking of each child while maintaining the highest educational standards. Students read, type, and orate their way to develop the following:
- Knowledge: Students gain deeper understanding of how both math and science link together in various areas of their lives.
- Literary response: Students learn how writing weaves itself through a number of disciplines and utilize a different form of self-expression.
- Critical analysis: Students use evaluation strategies to critically analyze the world around them, transforming raw data into learning tools for others.
- Collaboration: Students have the opportunity to lend their voice to a project while simultaneously engaging and learning from one another as well as other adults and community members.
